CMU|NSBE Events: Fall 2008 Recap
Hello, and welcome to CMU|NSBE Events!
Fall 2008 was an exciting semester, featuring Rent-A-Dog, the Region 2 Fall Regional Conference (FRC) and of course, NSBE 2-HYPE weekend!
Rent-A-Dog
First up was our second Rent-A-Dog fundraiser. The proceeds were shared with the Western PA Humane Society, who provided puppies and dogs. Students paid to pet, walk and play with one of the dogs. Some stopped between classes for a break, while some showed up minutes after the puppies arrived. Just like last year, it was very popular and the CMU campus community is definitely looking forward to it again.
Fall Regional Conference
Our next major event was the Region 2 FRC in Norfolk, VA. CMU|NSBE made the long drive down to VA for a weekend of fun, growth and fellowship. At the conference, members attended workshops with topics ranging from entrepreneurship to academic excellence to HIV/AIDS in the Black community. We spoke at regional meetings, went to undergraduate research poster competitions, and enjoyed dinner with chapters from all over the region.
NSBE 2-Hype Weekend
Last, but definitely not least, was NSBE 2-Hype Weekend, November 13 - 16. It started with a trip to Pittsburgh Stevens Middle School on Thursday (Nov 13), to talk to the students about engineering and NSBE.
Friday was the Date Auction, and this year we partnered with SPIRIT.
On Saturday, almost 30 high school students came to our College Prep Workshop. The College Prep Workshop is a morning event where high school students from the Pittsburgh area come to learn about college admissions, do an engineering activity, ask questions of a CMU student panel, and more!
Finally, Sunday was our first freshman luncheon, where our freshmen members enjoyed a meal and listened to a guest speaker, Damian Durado from CMARC.
As you can see, our Programs Zone has been working hard to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of all the chapter members who came out and supported the events. Thank you!
